One Week in Japan: Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka Adventure

7-Day Japan: The Golden Route Itinerary

Days 1–3: Tokyo (The High-Tech Metropolis)

  • Day 1: Modern Tokyo & Neon Lights. Start in Shinjuku. Visit the Metropolitan Government Building for free panoramic views, then head to Shibuya to experience the famous “Scramble” crossing and the Hachiko Statue. End your night in the tiny bars of Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane).
  • Day 2: Culture & Fashion. Spend the morning at Meiji Jingu Shrine, a peaceful forest in the city. Walk through the colorful, eccentric Takeshita Street in Harajuku, then transition to the luxury boutiques and architecture of Omotesando.
  • Day 3: Old Tokyo & Akihabara. Visit Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple in Asakusa. In the afternoon, explore the “Electric Town” of Akihabara for anime, gaming, and gadgets. For your final Tokyo dinner, try a high-end sushi spot or a themed izakaya.

Days 4–5: Kyoto (The Cultural Heart)

  • Day 4: Zen Gardens & Golden Pavilions. Take the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Kyoto (approx. 2 hours). Head straight to Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Pavilion). In the afternoon, walk through the serene Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and visit the Tenryu-ji Temple.
  • Day 5: Shrines & Gion. Wake up early to beat the crowds at Fushimi Inari Shrine with its thousands of red torii gates. Later, explore the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which offers a massive wooden stage with city views. Spend your evening in the Gion District, where you might spot a Geiko or Maiko walking to an appointment.

Day 6: Osaka (The Kitchen of Japan)

  • Morning: History. Take a short 30-minute train to Osaka. Start at Osaka Castle to learn about the city’s samurai history.
  • Afternoon/Evening: Food & Fun. Head to Shinsekai for a retro vibe and kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). Spend your final night in Dotonbori. The neon signs (like the Glico Running Man) and the incredible street food—Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki—make it the ultimate Japanese finale.

Day 7: Departure from Osaka

  • Do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Don Quijote or the Kuromon Ichiba Market before heading to Kansai International Airport (KIX) for your flight home.

Essential Travel Tips

Manners: Remember that talking loudly on trains or eating while walking is generally discouraged. Carrying a small bag for your trash is also helpful, as public trash cans are rare.

Connectivity: Rent a Pocket Wi-Fi or buy an eSIM. Navigating Japan without Google Maps is a challenge due to the complex street addresses.

IC Cards: Pick up a Suica or Pasmo card (or add it to your Apple/Google Wallet). You can use these for all local trains, buses, and even at convenience stores (Konbini).

Luggage Forwarding: Use Takkyubin (luggage delivery services) to send your large suitcases from your Tokyo hotel to your Kyoto or Osaka hotel. It’s affordable and saves you from hauling bags onto crowded trains.
