7 Days in Iceland: Waterfalls, Glaciers & Northern Lights

7-Day Iceland: Fire & Ice Expedition

Day 1: Arrival & The Blue Lagoon

  • Morning: Land at Keflavík. Pick up your 4WD rental car (essential for safety and flexibility).
  • Afternoon: Geothermal Soak. Head straight to the Blue Lagoon (book months in advance) or the more local Sky Lagoon near Reykjavík to relax after your flight.
  • Evening: Reykjavík. Explore the colorful capital. Walk past Hallgrímskirkja church and enjoy a fresh seafood dinner at the Old Harbor.

Day 2: The Golden Circle

  • Morning: Þingvellir National Park. Walk between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates at this UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Afternoon: Geysir & Gullfoss. Witness the Strokkur geyser erupting every few minutes, then drive to the massive Gullfoss (Golden Falls).
  • Evening: Natural Hot Springs. Soak in the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir for a more rustic, sustainable geothermal experience.

Day 3: South Coast Waterfalls

  • Morning: Seljalandsfoss. The famous waterfall you can walk behind. Nearby, don’t miss the “hidden” Gljúfrabúi tucked inside a canyon.
  • Afternoon: Skógafoss. A thunderous 60-meter drop. Climb the stairs to the top for a view of the coastline.
  • Evening: Vík. Overnight in the charming village of Vík. Keep an eye on the Aurora Forecast tonight!

Day 4: Black Sands & Basalt Columns

  • Morning: Reynisfjara. Walk the world-famous black sand beach and admire the towering basalt columns. Note: Stay far back from the “sneaker waves.”
  • Afternoon: Dyrhólaey. Drive up to the lighthouse for a bird’s-eye view of the black coastline and the massive stone arch in the sea.
  • Evening: Northern Lights Hunt. If the sky is clear, drive away from village lights to spot the Aurora Borealis dancing overhead.

Day 5: Glaciers & Diamonds

  • Morning: Skaftafell. Take a guided Glacier Hike on Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. It’s a surreal experience walking on ancient blue ice.
  • Afternoon: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Watch massive icebergs drift toward the ocean. Across the road is Diamond Beach, where ice chunks sparkle like crystals on the black sand.
  • Evening: Höfn. Head to this fishing town, famous for its local langoustine (Icelandic lobster).

Day 6: Canyons & Slow Travel

  • Morning: Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. A stunning, deep canyon that looks like something out of a fantasy novel. Stick to the marked paths to protect the fragile moss.
  • Afternoon: Drive back toward Reykjavík. Stop at any sights you missed on the way out, or explore the quiet town of Selfoss.
  • Evening: Farewell Dinner. Enjoy a meal featuring local Icelandic ingredients like lamb or fermented shark (if you’re brave!).

Day 7: Reykjanes Peninsula & Departure

  • Morning: Volcanic Landscapes. Before heading to the airport, explore the Reykjanes Peninsula. See the bridge between continents and the bubbling mud pools of Gunnuhver.
  • Afternoon: Departure. Drop off your rental car at KEF Airport for your flight home.

Icelandic Travel Essentials

Clothing: Dress in layers. You’ll need a waterproof outer shell, a fleece or wool mid-layer, and sturdy hiking boots.

The Northern Lights: These are visible from September to April. You need three things: darkness, clear skies, and solar activity. Use the Vedur.is app to track cloud cover.

Safety First: Icelandic weather changes every 5 minutes. Check Safe.is daily for road closures and wind warnings, especially when driving a high-profile vehicle.

Sustainability: Tap water in Iceland is among the purest in the world. Never buy bottled water; just refill your reusable bottle at any sink.
